English is made up of reading and writing. These are taught in separate English lessons as well as through children using their literacy skills across the curriculum and in all aspects of academy life. We use Accelerated Reader to monitor children’s progress in reading. Children complete a quiz after each book they have read. The programme records their reading age, suggests books within their range and tracks progress. Reading and comprehension skills are taught and reinforced through Guided Reading sessions. In these sessions, children work in groups of similar ability to read and discuss texts.
Our timetable includes a daily Skills session to focus on handwriting, spelling, phonics, times tables, problem solving and guided reading.
